Situato sulla cima del promontorio del Caprione, Montemarcello domina dall'alto sia il Golfo della Spezia che la Val di Magra. Secondo la tradizione sembra che il nome risalga all'epoca romana, ricordando la vittoria riportata sui Liguri dal console Marco Claudio Marcello nel 155 a.C.
Nel 1286 il Vescovo di Luni Enrico da Fucecchio fece erigere delle fortificazioni sul promontorio, tra cui la torre circolare posta all'entrata del paese.
All'estremità occidentale del paese vi è la parrocchia di S.Pietro, la cui costruzione risale al 1474, ma che fu profondamente ristrutturata nel XVII secolo, secondo i canoni dello stile barocco. Al suo interno sono conservate alcune opere di pregevole valore artistico, quali un'ancora marmorea del 1529 raffigurante Gesù Cristo, San Sebastiano e San Rocco, attribuita a Domenico Gar, e un trittico quattrocentesco, che raffigura la Vergine del Rosario fra San Pietro e San Giovanni, attribuito al c.d. Maestro di Borsigliana (attivo nella vicina Garfagnana).
Montemarcello dal 19 aprile 2006 fa parte del circuito dei Borghi più belli d'Italia.

On the top of promontory of Caprione, the village of Montemarcello overviews both the Gulf of La Spezia and the Valley of the river Magra.
According to tradition it seems that its name dates back to the roman times to recall the victory of Consul Marco Claudio Marcello against the Ligurians in 155 b.C. In 1286 the Bishop of Luni, Enrico Fucecchio ordered the building of some fortifications on the promontory,particulary the circular tower at the northern entrance of the village. To the western end of the village, we can visit the parish of S. Pietro, built in 1474, but restructured in the XVII century, according to the rules of the baroque style. Inside the chapel the visitor can appreciate some valuable works of art, like a marble altarpiece of 1529, representing Jesus Christ, S.Sebastiano and S.Rocco by Domenico Gar and a triptych of the XV century with a Virgin Mary between S.Pietro and S.Giovanni by the so-called “Maestro di Borsigliana” (whose works are mainly to be found in the area called “Garfagnana”, not far from here). Montemarcello from 19 April 2006 is part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

La spiaggia di Punta Corvo
Punta Corvo è sicuramente uno dei luoghi la cui bellezza selvaggia e a tinte forti lascia il visitatore senza parole e affascinato. La spiaggia è stata inserita nell'elenco delle spiagge più belle d'Italia ed è la più estesa tra quelle che si sono formate nelle insenature della costa che va verso Tellaro, Per chi vuole raggiungere la spiaggia esistono due possibilità: a piedi da Montemarcello, sconsigliata a chi non è un grande camminatore, in quanto si deve percorrere una scalinata di 700 gradini o in barca con il servizio in funzione con partenze da Bocca di Magra e Fiumaretta. Durante il viaggio in barca si sfiora lo scoglio detto “Rocca Grossa” e “La Tana del serpente”, un anfratto creato dal mare dove si narra vivesse un temibile serpente marino. Poi si arriva a Punta Bianca, con i suoi scogli bianchi e la spiaggia che porta lo stesso nome, La spiaggia di Punta Corvo qui la costa diventa sempre più selvaggia, da lì a poco si giunge alla spiaggia di Punta Corvo

Punta Corvo is surely one of the places whose wild beauty leaves the visitor at loss for words. The beach has been included in the list of the most beautiful beaches in Italy and is the largest of those originated in the inlets of the coast towards Tellaro. Two are the possibilities to get there: on foot from Montemarcello ( 700 steps), quite tiring if you are not in practice or by boat, with the service from Bocca di Magra and Fiumaretta. During the boat trip we pass then by the cliffs named “Rocca Grossa” and “La Tana del Serpente”, a gorge created by the sea waves where they say a terrible sea snake lived. Then we arrive Punta Bianca with is white cliffs and a coast becoming more and more wild. Soon after we arrive at the beach of Punta Corvo.

Una passeggiata da non perdere è quella sino al punto panoramico del Corvo, una terrazza naturale dove si può ammirare lo splendido panorama delle isole del Golfo della Spezia: Tino, Tinetto e Palmaria ed il promontorio del Golfo raggiungibile seguendo un semplice percorso da Montemarcello.

A walk not to be missed is the one up to the viewpoint of the Corvo: it is a natural “terrace” from where yo can see the islands of the Gulf of La Spezia islands: Tino, Tinetto and Palmaria. To get there you can follow a short path from Montemarcello.
